India has taken enormous strides towards achieving food & nutritional security in the country. Over the last few decades, food-grain production has surpassed population growth. It registered a fivefold increase during a period when population grew by three times.This growth in agriculture ensures not only food and nutritional security for the people, but also equitable distribution of income. Agriculture and allied sectors are thus critical for inclusive growth.

India ranks first in the world in production of milk, pulses and jute; second in rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnut, vegetables, fruits and cotton; and is a leading producer of spices & plantation crops, livestock, fisheries and poultry.This stupendous success story has been made possible due to innovation by scientists, assistance under governmental schemes & programmes and, most importantly, hard work of farmers.

To celebrate farmers’ great contribution to our economy, Krishi Vasant, 2014 is being organised as a large congregation of farmers and other stake holders from the entire country. Millions of farmers and others will also be reached out through web-cast at District/Block level and telecast of the event in regional languages. It is a joint effort of the Government of India and Government of Maharashtra in the vibrant city of Nagpur located in the heart of India. Unique features of the event also include more than 300 live demonstrations of different crops, animals, birds & fish and intensive interactions between farmers & scientists in regional languages.

With CII as a Strategic Partner, the event is being organized at Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR), Nagpur, a premier research institute, under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR).

The event also coincides with centenary celebrations of Late Shri Vasant Rao Naik, who steered agricultural development in Maharashtra during Green Revolution era.
